how to play Runes

Players: 2

Game Pieces:

Objective: Reduce your opponent's HP to 0.

Setup:

  1. Draw a 7x7 grid on the paper.
  2. Divide the grid into two 2x7 sections on the top and bottom and a 3x7 section in the middle.
  3. For each player, denote that player's name beside a 2x7 section. This denotes their territory. The 3x7 section in the middle is no man's land.
  4. Designate a starting player.
  5. Write four tally marks below the starting player's name and five tally marks below the non-starting player's name. This denotes their HP.
The resulting board should look like this:
John
||||
Jane
|||||

Gameplay:

The starting player begins with 4 HP, and the non-starting player begins with 5 HP. Each player has two rows of territory on opposing sides of the board. The middle three rows are no man's land.

On your turn, write a rune in your territory or in no man's land. There are four runes: Fire (), Water (), Earth (), and Air ().

Spells can be cast by sequencing runes. When you place a rune, if it has formed a complete sequence on the board, you may cast that sequence's associated spell. If the newly placed rune completes multiple sequences, you can cast multiple spells. There are nine sequences, which are detailed below:

Sequence Spell Effect
Heal You gain 1 HP.
Flood Your opponent can't write in their territory next turn.
Cultivate Write another rune.
Freeze You can't lose HP until your opponent casts Melt.
Burn Your opponent loses 1 HP.
Pollute You can write in your opponent's territory next turn.
Raze Erase a rune.
Melt Undo your opponent's Freeze.
Frostfire Your opponent loses 2 HP. You gain 2 HP.

Sequences can be written left to right, right to left, top to bottom, or bottom to top. They cannot be written diagonally. You can use runes placed by your opponents as parts of a sequence.

Example Turn: You are John, the starting player. Your territory is the top two rows. The current board is shown below.

You write in the yellow highlighted space. You have created the sequences (vertically) and (horizontally), casting Heal and Cultivate. You gain 1 HP and you can write another rune. You write in the purple highlighted space. You create the sequence (vertically), casting Burn. Your opponent loses 1 HP. It is now your opponent's turn.

Turns are taken back and forth between the starting player and the non-starting player. Once a player's HP is reduced to 0, their opponent wins the game. If a player is ever unable to write a rune due to a lack of space, the game is a draw.
